Oven Glossary


Air Cooled Doors
the cooker doors stay cool meaning you and your family won’t burn yourselves while you are cooking, a great safety feature.

Built-In (or Integrated)
means your machine is built-in or integrated into a specific kitchen unit.

a built under oven can be built underneath standard sized kitchen units.

Cavity Size
this is the internal capacity of your oven measured in Litres.

Child Safety Lock
this feature means that the machine will not be able to be opened by children when the machine is in use or when the lock is enabled.

this is the process of heat rising and being replaced by cool air.

this is a term used by Neff ovens. Circotherm is the Neff version of a fan-assisted oven. This means that the oven heats up rapidly and needs little or no preheating.

Conventional Oven
heats from the bottom of the cavity only, great for baking as it is hotter at the top of the cavity.

this is the Council for Registered Gas Installers, the regulatory body for gas engineers.

Corgi Registered Engineer
this is a professional accredited gas fitter required to fit any gas appliance.

Double Eye Level Open
this oven type which is designed to be integrated at eye level within your kitchen units.

Double Glazed Window
these doors contain a reflective glass which helps to keep the heat inside the oven.

Double Ovens
there are two ovens, one above and one below. The main oven is normally a multifunction or fan oven and is found below a smaller conventional oven.

a fuel type that delivers quick, precise and constant results.

an electrician may be required for your installation. Fully qualified technicians will be able to deal with your electric mains when connecting your cooker.

Electronic Controls
they provide greater accuracy and maintain a constant temperature.

Energy Rating
this refers to the amount of energy the appliance consumes. Appliances are rated for energy, with ratings between A (the most efficient) and C (the least efficient).

Fan Assisted Ovens
a fan at the rear circulates the hot air inside the oven. These ovens give the most even temperatures.

Flame Failure Safety Device (FSD)
a device required by law to be fitted to gas appliances in multi-dwelling properties such as flats, rented property and in all cases in the Republic of Ireland. The device cuts off the gas supply immediately if it senses the flame has been extinguished.

the front of the appliance is visible and can be placed anywhere in the kitchen, either underneath a work surface or stood independently.

Fully Programmable Timer
giving you the ability to start and end your cooking time as and when you require on the range cooker by presetting this useful feature.

a fuel type famed for its responsive nature, particularly when used for hobs. Gas as a fuel source in ovens also helps maintain the moisture of food. Gas is available in two forms: Natural Gas (piped) and LPG (bottled). Please make sure you choose the correct type of cooker for your gas type.

Hard Wiring
most cooking appliances require hard wiring into the mains electricity supply as opposed to a plug and socket. You’ll need a fully qualified electrician to do this for you.

a type of machine designed to be hidden from view behind your kitchen cupboards to maintain a seamless overall design in your kitchen.

Knob Control
this is a control type that is used to operate the functions of an appliance by both pressing and turning.

LED Auto Programmer/Clock
a 24 hour clock that allows start and end cook times to be set.

Liquid-Petroleum-Gas is a type of bottled portable gas which is used where a piped supply is not available.

LPG Convertible
most gas appliances can only be connected to natural gas. Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) kits are available with some appliances allowing them to convert from natural gas to LPG.

Main Oven
the larger oven in a double oven appliance is classed as the main oven, great for cooking everyday meals and larger items.

Minute Minder
a popular type of timer that’s set for the length of cooking time you need. When it’s finished, an alarm goes off.

this type of oven heats from the top and bottom inside the cooker, also it has a fan which circulates the heat inside the cavity and provides a number of cooking options.

Natural Gas
natural Gas is a piped supply of gas which is primarily available in larger urban areas.

Programmable Timer
this feature gives you the flexibility to start and end your cooking by pre-setting your requirements.

Push Button
this is a control type that requires buttons to be pressed to function.

Pyrolytic Liners
these are self-cleaning oven liners which clean every part of the oven’s interior. During the cleaning process, the oven reaches a temperature of about 500°. Any old food or grease is carbonised and left as a pile of ash on the bottom of the oven, ready to be wiped away. This process can take between 2- 3 hours and should be carried out every few weeks.

Stay Clean Liners
these liners burn off any baked on food while the cooker is in use, a great easy cleaning method.

Secondary Oven
the smaller oven in a double oven appliance, great for cooking smaller meals or to use when the main oven has something separate cooking inside.

Single Ovens
great for cooking smaller meals, single ovens are ideal if you only need to cook using one temperature at a time.

Steam Ovens
steam is used in this type of oven to cook your food. This is considered a healthy alternative to traditional ovens and locks in vitamins and minerals while keeping the same great taste in your meals.

Triple Glazed Window
this is a door with three panes of reflected and insulated glass which is designed to increase the oven’s efficiency and keep the window cooler to the touch.

Touch Control
this is a sleek control type for hobs which is both stylish and easy to keep clean.
